GOD’S PEOPLE GATHER

QUIET REFLECTION:   David Holwerda tells us that a yoke "both restrains and enables.  It is simultaneously a burden and a possibility. The question confronting humanity is whose yoke or what yoke does one put on? No one lives without a yoke…"

CALL TO WORSHIP

One:  Praise be to God who reigns above the heavens.

All:         Praise be to God who dwells within our hearts.

One:         Let the majesty of creation startle us into reverence.

All:         Let each one of us – man, woman, and child – bow before our Maker.  Come let us worship God together!

*HYMN #558 (Blue Hymnal)  My Life Flows On (Verses 1,2) HOW CAN I KEEP

*PRAYER OF INVOCATION (unison)

Gracious God, we thank you that we can rest in you, secure amid the conflict and confusion of life.  We thank you that you provide for our needs and that you have trusted us to one another’s care.  Help us to receive with humility and to give with joy.  Help us to share what we have without fear of tomorrow.  May we be peacemakers and justice makers that, one day, humanity may choose bread over weapons, and fairness over greed.  We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ who invited us to pray together …

*LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven; hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.  Amen.

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (responsive)

One:         Loving God, here we are again, creatures who turn to you for help.

Left:       Some of us are content, some discontented; some confident, some anxious.

Right:     Some of us are light-hearted and some low-spirited; some find faith easy and some find faith difficult.

All:         In your warm love, please welcome us and save us from our sin and ignorance.

One:         You are aware of the circumstances from which we come.

Left:       From secure homes or from temporary accommodation; from an environment of caring love or from isolated aloneness.

Right:     Some of us come from daily work that satisfies or from work that compromises us; from exciting days or from long boring hours.

All:         In your warm love, please welcome us and save us from our sin and ignorance.

One:         You know the true condition of our spirits.

Left:       Some are free and happy, some in bondage and shame; some have few regrets, some have many.

Right:     Some of us are repentant, some in denial; some are thirsty for better things, some are apathetic.

All.          In your warm love, please welcome us and save us from our sin and ignorance.

One:         All of us have two things in common:  we know that we have fallen short of the goal you have set us.

Left:       We know that you are a God of forgiveness and regeneration.

Right:     Please deal with each person as you see best.

All:         By your free grace in Christ Jesus, let us know the peace of being put right with you and one another.  For your love’s sake.  Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the Beginning, is now and ever shall be; World without end.  Amen.

(We serve the congregation the elements in the pews.  We invite you to take the bread and wait until all are served, signifying our unity as One Body of Christ.  We invite you to take the cup when you are ready, signifying your personal relationship with Christ.  It is the custom at this church to use unfermented grape juice in the cup.)

Prayer of Thanksgiving (unison)

For the healing you have given us in the brokenness of bread and the pouring out of cup, we thank you.  For the community that you have restored in us through the sharing of life, we thank you.  For the courage and strength that you have promised to us even as we have honored the ones of courage in our own past, we thank you.  Send us forth from this place in love, letting justice be worked out with gentleness and power known in the presence of your Spirit.  Amen.

A FILM: THE CUP will be shown at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, July 10th, at 7:00 p.m. as the first of the MAEC SUMMER FILM SERIES.  Based on true events, the story follows the lives of two boys who are sent to a monastery in exile in the picturesque foothills of the Himalayas.   A whirlwind of events not usually associated with such an austere setting follows, with the big issue of how they can  watch the soccer World Cup Finals.  Future films at other locations are July 24 at 6:00 p.m. (family film), August 7 and  21 at 7:00 p.m.

SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRAM   is held in the Parish Hall each Sunday of the summer for children of pre-school age through grade 5.  Older children are encouraged to remain in Worship with their parents but may assist the teacher in the Parish Hall or take turns assisting in the Nursery in Room 2 (see the sign-up sheet found on the "Volunteers Needed" bulletin board outside the Sanctuary).
